On the 29th September sixty of our top advertising agencies in 8 cities around the UK opened their doors to over 1,200 students, school leavers, graduates and career switchers for Advertising Unlocked 2017 – a joint industry open-day that gave us the opportunity to showcase the many types of careers available in Advertising, Media and Marketing Communications.
Everyone who attended gained a real insight into how ads are made and how they eventually reach their audiences. There were plenty of practical sessions to get stuck into – from learning about the latest VR technology (being used in ads such as the John Lewis ‘Buster The Boxer’ Christmas advert) to watching a shoot for a real ad campaign. And most valuable was having those already working in the industry on hand throughout the day, from creatives, to planners to digital and tech savvy entrepreneurs to explain the part they play in creating an ad campaign for some of the biggest brands in the world.
Everyone left the day with plenty of insight into the types of roles that would suit them and details on how to pursue a career in the industry whether via apprenticeships, work experience, grad programmes down to tracking jobs pages of agencies that you most want to work for.
The day made a big impression on both the visitors and hosts, with over 95% of attendees saying how the day had made them want to pursue a career in advertising, and more than 97% of agencies saying that they want to be involved next year.
Sixteen-year-old Jack Hayman visited Publicis London, he said:
I really enjoyed the day and the insight into the work that Publicis do. I hadn’t considered working in advertising before so this has made me re-think what to pursue as a career. I will definitely be applying for some summer internships.
